Helping Our Own People, Inc. (HOOP) is an all volunteer 501©3 organization whose mission is to provide basic necessities to those living on the streets of Indianapolis to survive another night … no strings attached … no questions asked … unconditional giving.
HOOP is governed by a seven member Board of Directors, which is responsible for the overall operation of the organization. It has documented Guidelines which provides rules and standards of safe conduct while on an outing for our volunteers.
We have seen the homeless on park benches, under bridges, and at the corner table of a fast food restaurant. We felt compassion, wondered what to do, concerned that a cash donation may end up doing more harm than good. We, therefore, provide food, clothing, bedding, and hygiene products. Yet we also provide a hand and conversation; a link back to the community.
We approach the homeless with respect and dignity. We are continually humbled, knowing that we are so blessed; we could be the one out on the streets. We offer what we have as a sign of hope and to remind those we serve that they are not forgotten; there are many who care enough to donate items, and collect items from others for the homeless.
The vision of HOOP is to be recognized by the Homeless community of Indianapolis as a trusted friend, available for support and/or advice, to be able to provide food and or clothing in a time of need, while connecting on a personal level as well.
The beauty of HOOP is in the UNCONDITIONAL GIVING. No questions asked. From the beginning, we in HOOP are not required to judge those we serve. We simply ask, “Are you hungry?” If someone accepts our offer, we pour a cup of soup and hand the person a sandwich and snacks. Many people have answered, “No, I’m okay,” and walked on.
Over the first three months of this year, we have passed out over 90 gallons of soup, 1300 sandwiches, 1400 hard boiled eggs, 348 Blankets along with shirts, pants, socks, underwear and personal care items.
